CHICAGO (AP) — Pete Alonso launched his major league-leading 19th home run and Carlos Carrasco earned his first win this season as the New York Mets routed the Chicago Cubs 10-1 on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.Brett Baty knocked in New York’s first two runs and the Mets pounded out 15 hits on a chilly night at Wrigley Field to ruin Kyle Hendricks’ season debut for the Cubs in his return from a serious shoulder injury. Jeff McNeil had three hits and scored three times. New York got four straight base hits with two outs in a three-run third inning and took a 4-1 lead on Starling Marte’s two-run single.“We just put together good at-bats in some key situations and big moments there,” McNeil said after the Mets were outscored 11-4 in the first two games of the series. “We didn’t play the kind of baseball we wanted to the last few days. To get this win is big.”Alonso added a two-run homer in the seventh and Brandon Nimmo laced a two-run triple in a three-run eighth.Dan...

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Anna Nordqvist was among 11 players who won matches for the second straight day, only the three-time major champion from Sweden had to work the longest at the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play.Nordqvist had her second match go all 18 holes Thursday before she held on for a 1-up victory over Lauren Coughlin. Nordqvist never trailed, but she watched a 4-up lead after eight holes shrink to 1 up after the 13th.They halved the last five holes, leaving Nordqvist in good position — but still not safe — to win her group and advance to the knockout stage on the weekend at Shadow Creek. The second day of round-robin group play was all about staying alive, and 16 players from the field of 64 already are mathematically eliminated. Xiyu “Janet” Lin was the only top seed in her group to get eliminated, losing another match, this time to Pajaree Anannarukarn. The tournament attracted only two of the top 10 players in the women’s world ranking, and both suffered setbacks...

Editorial: Congress takes a break while debt default looms

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:30:16 GMT

Note to Congress: get back to work.Though they’ve yet to reach a deal on the debt ceiling, House lawmakers are leaving Washington for the long Memorial Day weekend.Sorry, but this isn’t the time to kick back and watch a parade. The deadline to avoid a debt default is a week away, and as The Hill reported, negotiators say they’re getting closer to making a deal.Close is not good enough – certainly not good enough to warrant a break.“Still working through thorny issues, but there’s goodwill on all sides,” Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), a key ally of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and negotiator in spending talks with the White House, told The Hill on Thursday.“It’s just tougher issues that remain,” he added. All the more reason to work through the weekend. Because resolving those  “tougher issues that remain” are what’s keeping Americans anxious, wondering if their Social Security check, military paycheck, veterans benefits and/or funding for...

Connaughton: Follow the money for key to Beacon Hill payroll blackout

Article V of the Massachusetts Constitution requires that the branches of government “at all times” be accountable to the people. But few state governments are less accountable to the people than Massachusetts. The latest evidence came when state senators rejected a proposed amendment to the Senate’s budget plan that would have required the state’s quasi-public agencies to post their payrolls on the state comptroller’s website. From DCR summer lifeguards to corrections officers, salaries are available online. Why shouldn’t that be the case for employees of the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency? Perhaps the answer can be found in the words of Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester), who sponsored the amendment.“The quasi-public entities have, in many cases, very highly compensated individuals and many of them … do not share that information with the comptroller’s office,” Tarr told the Boston Herald. He might have been referring to the fact that quasi-public agencies are...

MOVIE REVIEW“The Eight Mountains”Not Rated. In Italian and Nepali with subtitles. At the Coolidge Corner.Grade: AEngrossing and joyously rustic, “The Eight Mountains” comes from married Belgian filmmakers Felix van Groeningen (“Beautiful Boy”) and first-timer Charlotte Vandermeersch, who co-wrote the screenplay based on the best-selling novel by Paolo Cognetti. It begins when shy 12 year-old Pietro (Lupo Barbieri) from the city of Turino goes on a modest vacation with his mother (Elena Lietti) at the foot of the Italian Alps in a tiny (and getting smaller by the minute) Alpine village named Grana. The boy meets another boy his age, a rustic semi-brute named Bruno (Cristiano Sassella), whose father works as a bricklayer down among the flatlanders and is mostly absent. Pietro’s father Giovanni (Filippo Timi) is a science-minded company executive, who drives an Alpha Romeo, loves the mountains and takes the boys on climbs. Giovanni keeps track of their journeys on a map he has tac...
