85-Year-Old Grandfather Killed, Grandson Injured in Pedestrian Accident near West BoulevardBALDWIN HILLS, CA (July 18, 2023) – Thursday night, one victim was killed and one was injured in a pedestrian crash on Santa Rosalia Drive.Police responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m., near West Boulevard on July 13th.According to reports, the driver of a dark-colored vehicle struck an 85-year-old man and his 41-year-old grandson as they were attempting to cross the street.Upon impact, the driver fled the scene without rendering aid or contacting authorities. Shortly after, another driver that was passing by noticed the men and called for help.Paramedics arrived and transported both victims to a nearby hospital where the grandfather later succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, his grandson was listed in stable condition.Following the events, the police are still looking for the suspect, and a standing reward of up to $50,000 was posted by the LAPD. 1 Killed, 1 Arrested after DUI Accident near Clifton CourtBYRON, CA (July 18, 2023) – Saturday night, one passenger was killed and a driver was arrested after a DUI collision on Byron Highway.Police responded to the scene around 11:05 p.m., on the southbound lanes of the freeway just south of Clifton Court.For DUI related reasons, the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban veered off the road and traveled down an embankment.Medical crews arrived and pronounced the Chevrolet passenger dead at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics took the driver to a nearby hospital with significant injuries.Following preliminary duties, officers determined that the driver was intoxicated at the time. As a result, police arrested the driver at the hospital for driving under the influence.At this time, authorities have not released the identity of the deceased passenger. (KRON) -- Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said she will reject any salary raise that is greater than the minimum legally required by the Oakland city charter. The Oakland City Council is set to vote on the mayor's raise Tuesday and a proposed raise of around $75,000 annually for the first-term mayor has raised eyebrows.Currently, Mayor Thao earns around $226,000 annually, making her the fourth highest paid mayor in the state. The minimum mandated raise would see Thao get a pay bump of around $13,000. The mayor said that if the council approves any raise above that, she would refund any amount exceeding the city chartered minimum and use it to deliver services to the city.
