Volkswagen is recalling 143,000 of its big Atlas SUVs in the US because a faulty sensor on the front passenger side can switch the airbag system off under certain conditions. Until the issue can be corrected, VW is advising owners to avoid letting people ride in that seat. The problem is “sporadic,” according to documents VW filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle recalls. Most modern passenger vehicles have weight sensors in the front seat to detect if someone small — like a child — is riding in that seat. Airbags, which inflate forcefully in the event of a crash, can injure small children. If these sensors detect a small person is seated there, the airbag is switched off.But faulty sensors in some Atlas SUVs can cause the so-called “passenger occupant detection system” to indicate a system issue and deactivate the airbag. This could leave front seat passengers without the protection of the airbag in th...US 36 closed due to deputy-involved shooting

The beautiful stretch of weather continues this Wednesday across South Florida. Following rather hot temperatures earlier in the week, highs the rest of this week will be closer to average at about 2-4F above normal at most locations.Expect lots of sunshine this Wednesday paired with highs in the mid 80s along with a better breeze out of the east, sustained up to 20 mph. This will lead to more hazardous marine conditions and a high risk for rip currents at the east coast beaches. It will also be mostly dry besides a spotty shower, especially in the Florida Keys. The sunshine and breezy conditions will stick around through Friday, still with mostly sunny skies, low rain chances and highs hovering in the mid 80s courtesy of high pressure in control over the Atlantic. Morning low temperatures will be warm as well, generally into the mid 70s.Now by the weekend, some changes will begin to arrive to our weather pattern. LONDON — More people affected by the U.K’s infected blood scandal should be entitled to compensation, its public inquiry has recommended.Dubbed the “worst treatment disaster in the NHS,” it has been estimated that thousands of people were infected with HIV and hepatitis from contaminated blood they received from the NHS between 1970 and 1991.Former Prime Minister Theresa May set up a public inquiry into the scandal in 2017, describing it as “an appalling tragedy which should simply never have happened.” In July, the inquiry’s chair Brian Langstaff, while continuing to hear evidence, recommended that victims should receive interim compensation of £100,000 until full settlements are agreed when the inquiry publishes its full report. The government made the first compensation payments in October, to around 4,000 surviving victims and widows. But campaigners said these awards did not go far enough, as they excluded the parents and children of victims....Polish farm minister quits amid protests over Ukrainian grain imports

Polish Agriculture Minister Henryk Kowalczyk resigned Wednesday amid a wave of farmers’ protests over unprecedented inflows of Ukrainian produce into the country.Kowalczyk said he decided to quit because the European Commission would not agree to reimpose tariffs and duties on Ukrainian grain imports, a move his ministry has been calling for since December, despite initial opposition from the country’s leadership.“Since it is very clear that the farmers’ basic demand will not be met by the European Commission, I have made a decision and resigned as minister of agriculture and rural development,” Kowalczyk said in a statement. The protests, in which Kowalczyk was booted out of one conference and egged at another, threaten to shake the bedrock of the right-wing government’s traditional rural support ahead of a general election this fall.
