Oregon’s top court hears arguments in suit filed by GOP senators seeking reelection after boycott SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Supreme Court heard oral arguments Thursday in a lawsuit filed by Republican state senators who boycotted the Legislature for a record six weeks earlier this year and want to run for reelection despite a voter-approved constitutional amendment aimed at limiting walkouts. The GOP senators, including Senate Minority Leader Tim Knopp, are challenging the Oregon Secretary of State’s interpretation of the amendment. Passed by voters by a wide margin in 2022, Measure 113 amended the state constitution to bar lawmakers from reelection if they have 10 or more unexcused absences. Each of the five state senators who filed suit — Sens. Tim Knopp, Daniel Bonham, Suzanne Weber, Dennis Linthicum and Lynn Findley — racked up more than 10 absences during the walkout that ground the 2023 legislative session to a halt. The longest in the Legislature’s history, the boycott stalled hundreds of bills and made national headlines. Before the Oregon Supreme Court in t...

Broncos’ depth at outside linebacker will be tested following Nik Bonitto’s injury Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph understands the reality of the team’s depth at outside linebacker.Second-year edge rusher Nik Bonitto will not play in Saturday’s game against the Detroit Lions due to a knee injury. And if they don’t, Denver has no choice but to work with what it has.“The game is Saturday night. We can’t draft anybody else right now,” Joseph said.Bonitto’s absence is a big loss for the Broncos. He has been an effective pass-rush unit in recent weeks and recorded a team-best seven sacks and 18 quarterback hits in 13 games (three starts). It remains to be seen if Cooper is 100% hea...

This winter's El Niño could be one of the strongest in decades. What it could mean for California

This winter's El Niño could be one of the strongest in decades. What it could mean for California The 2023-24 El Niño is likely to be one for the record books. In an update released Thursday, the Climate Prediction Center said this winter's El Niño was slightly favored to be "historically strong." The national forecasters gave it about a 54% chance of being one of the five strongest since 1950. El Niño is back: What it could mean for California’s winter Those odds are up from last month, when the Climate Prediction Center gave this year's El Niño a 35% chance of being among the strongest ever, like the one we saw 2015-16 or 1997-98.But a super-strong El Niño doesn't necessarily mean super-strong impacts, like storms, flooding or heavy snow. "While stronger El Niño events increase the likelihood of El Niño-related climate anomalies, it does not imply expected impacts will emerge in all locations or be of strong intensity," says the Climate Prediction Center. What are they expecting to happen this winter? As with any weather, it depends on where you live. The precipitation outl...
