What’s behind E. coli in Point Reyes National Seashore? Beef grows between ranchers and environmentalists

The National Park Service has found E. coli bacteria levels well above health standards in several water bodies around the Point Reyes National Seashore, reigniting the contentious debate over the future of cattle grazing at the beloved Northern California landscape.Even as the park has taken major steps to make ranching less harmful to watersheds, contaminated water was detected at several sites, including a lagoon that flows into popular Kehoe Beach, indicating runoff from cattle manure at upstream ranches.“There certainly are improvements. But it’s not perfect. Substantial water-quality issues remain in the park,” said California Coastal Commission Deputy Director Cassidy Teufel in a Thursday presentation of park data from a year-long collection and testing effort at 24 different sites. But, surprisingly, cattle aren’t the only culprits: Tainted water was also found in two other popular sites, McClures and Abbott Beaches, which have few or no cattle — suggesting that wildlif...Jury convicts Bay Area man for 2021 road rage shooting

The first indication usually comes from a worker in Brownsville, Texas. That person informs Los Angeles officials that Texas authorities have just completed their latest roundup of immigrants from shelters and meeting sites. The state has loaded up a bus full of men, women and children and pointed it toward Los Angeles. As far as Texas is concerned, that’s all state officials need to do: Load the bus, ship them out. But in Brownsville, locals take it upon themselves to provide at least some of the help that Texas withholds, so they jump on the bus before it departs and create a quick manifest of those on board. They get names, phone numbers and other contact information for friends or loved ones they might have in California. Then the bus pulls out. Brownsville workers call their counterparts in Los Angeles and relay the manifest. The clock starts ticking.“We have 24 hours to start calling people,” said Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights, kno...SJSU student housing deal may be “win-win” for university, San Jose

SAN JOSE — A game-changing $113 million deal to bring San Jose State University students to a hotel tower is deemed to be the “ultimate win-win” for the school and the city’s downtown district, experts say.SJSU is poised to use the deal to bolster the university’s emerging strategy to transform all of downtown San Jose into its campus as the school’s influence widens and enriches the city’s entire urban core, not just the areas adjacent to the campus.SJSU logo on the sky bridge of Spartan Village on the Paseo, a San Jose State University student housing complex on South Market Street in downtown San Jose, concept. Q: The striping and light at Hamilton Place need to be fixed as soon as possible. I saw another near miss this week with someone in the confusing straight-to-left turn lane there. A big truck did not know the lane ended and almost took out the car on his right at the last moment. You could hear tires squealing. This signal and pavement striping are dangerous.Lindsay GeierA: This message followed your recent questions for Colin-the-city-spokesman.Q: Taking Leigh Avenue from De Rose Way to Hamilton has been an easy commute. Now the signal is constantly on at Hamilton Place, even when no one is making a left turn or leaving. It also now creates a very long wait for those going south on Leigh. I’ve seen people get so fed up that they stop, look and then proceed through the red light. Also, why, with all the densification, would the city think it was good idea to reduce Leigh Avenue to two lanes with large bike lanes, especially when the Los Gatos Creek bike trail is right there? LONDON (AP) — Everton was handed the biggest sporting sanction in the Premier League’s 31-year history on Friday for breaching the competition’s financial rules, with the deduction of 10 points dropping the team into next-to-last place in the standings. The northwest club reported three-year losses totaling nearly 372 million pounds ($454 million) last season. The league’s profit and financial sustainability rules allow clubs to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds ($128 million) over a three-year period or face sanctions. The league referred Everton to an independent commission in March because of the alleged breach of profitability and sustainability rules, following complaints from a slew of rival clubs.A five-day hearing was held last month and the commission has now published its verdict, which sees Everton fall from 14 points to four with immediate effect. That’s the same number of points as last-place Burnley. Everton has a superior goal difference. The club, wh...Luis Díaz inspira a Colombia a una emotiva victoria mientras su padre observa desde las gradas después de la liberación del secuestro
