His latest book is “Victories Never Last: Reading and Caregiving in a Time of Plague. The shock waves from Hamas’ attacks on Israel last week continue to resonate across Europe’s political landscape — and the effects have been especially worrisome in France.Fearing a “rise in tensions” at home, President Emmanuel Macron met with representatives from all political parties last week to discuss potential responses to the situation. His fears are well founded. France is home to the world’s third largest Jewish population, as well as Europe’s largest Muslim population. Moreover, the country’s past as a colonial power in North Africa and the Middle East — no less than its past as a collaborator with Nazi Germany in the Final Solution — makes the risks all the more real.In fact, tensions have already risen. On the same day Macron met with political parties, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin met with the p...Mass. House approves bill to strengthen gun laws

Shirley Arriaga of Chicopee, Brian Ashe of Longmeadow, Colleen Garry of Dracut, Patricia Haddad of Somerset, Kathleen LaNatra of Kingston, Christopher Markey of Dartmouth, Rady Mom of Lowell, David Robertson of Tewksbury, Aaron Saunders of Belchertown, Alan Silvia of Fall River, Jeffrey Turco of W...Solve It 7: TV Trouble

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields wanted to return to Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, coach Matt Eberflus said. But Fields couldn’t grip the football because of the right hand injury he suffered during a third-quarter sack and was sidelined for the rest of the 19-13 Bears loss.Whether Fields will miss more time is now the major question. The X-rays on Fields’ hand were negative for any fracture, but the Bears are awaiting the results of an MRI. Fox Sports and NFL Network reported Fields dislocated his thumb.“We’ll know more information tomorrow,” Eberflus said.In a 1-5 season that has become so much about determining whether Fields is the Bears’ quarterback of the future, those test results are perhaps more crucial than the final result on the field Sunday. Eberflus said Fields’ demeanor after the game was “great.”“He goes, ‘Coach, we’ll see where it is tomorrow,’ Eber...Justin Fields misses Chicago Bears practice, leaving rookie QB Tyson Bagent in line to make his 1st NFL start

A timetable for his recovery and return remains cloudy.Coach Matt Eberflus reiterated Wednesday morning that Fields’ reduced grip strength remains the primary issue and the team is monitoring that as the week progresses.Eberflus said the swelling in Fields’ right hand continues to go down, but he didn’t dismiss the possibility of Fields opting to have surgery on the thumb.“I believe we’ll have some clarity later in the week hopefully,” Eberflus said. “Again, nothing is off the table and nothing is on the table with that.
