GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Duke has spent weeks building consistency and cohesion on the offensive end. That has the 21st-ranked Blue Devils making extra passes, getting better looks and knocking down outside shots. It also has this freshman-laden bunch within a win of an Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament championship under first-year coach Jon Scheyer.Kyle Filipowski had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Jeremy Roach hit a huge 3-pointer at the 1:32 mark and Duke held off No. 14 Miami 85-78 in the ACC semifinals on Friday night.Roach’s 3 from the left wing over Isaiah Wong with the shot clock going down gave Duke a 78-71 lead that Miami couldn’t overcome in a well-played matchup that often resembled a second-weekend NCAA Tournament game.“I thought it was as high of a level of game as we’ve played,” Scheyer said. And the fourth-seeded Blue Devils (25-8) did enough late to stay in control, earning a meeting with No. 13 Virginia in Saturday’s final.Tyrese Proctor hit tw...

Bill banning marriages under age 16 passes in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A child marriage bill is heading to the West Virginia governor’s desk after lawmakers agreed to let 16- and 17-year-olds get married with restrictions. The House of Delegates passed the bill 83-9 without debate Saturday, a day after the Senate easily endorsed it after making changes to an earlier House version. Republican Gov. Jim Justice hasn’t publicly indicated whether he’ll sign it.Currently, children can marry as young as 16 in West Virginia with parental consent, and anyone younger than that regardless of age can get married with a judge’s waiver. The bill passed Saturday would remove the possibility that anyone younger than 16 could marry. Those ages 16 and 17 would have to obtain parental consent and they couldn’t marry someone more than four years older than them. Existing legal marriages, including those done in other states, would be unaffected. The bill was thought to be dead on Wednesday night when the Senate Judiciary Committee r...

Canton defeats Duxbury in Division 2 semifinal clash, 3-1

BOURNE — Coming off a penalty kill late in a 1–1 game, Canton captain AJ Thomas knew to gain some open space. He found a loose puck, gained body position, and fired the puck into the top corner to give his Bulldogs a lead over Duxbury in a Division 2 semifinal boys hockey game at Gallo Arena. He would add an empty netter to make it 3–1 a few minutes later and that would be all Canton would need to book its fourth trip to the TD Garden in the past five seasons.“I see (the puck) pop out into the middle of the ice,” Thomas said. “I raced for it, battled with the other kid and put it over his blocker side.”At one point in the contest, this result seemed unlikely. Neither team had surrendered a goal in the tournament up to this game, and the first period continued that streak. Towards the latter stages of the second period, Wick Ross buried a puck and put the Dragons in the lead. This felt like a dagger, and Dragons’ goalie Sam Mazanec continued to frustrate the Canton offense. Whether it’s tattoos, or how we scream, or the intensity we have on the ice. LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Republican Party on Saturday selected a combative former state representative who promised to be a “wartime” leader as its new chairman, joining several other state GOPs this year that have elected far-right figures and election conspiracy theorists to their top posts. The move in Colorado comes as the party totters on the brink of political irrelevance in a state moving swiftly to the left.Former State Rep. Dave Williams, who unsuccessfully tried to insert the phrase “Let’s Go Brandon” into his name on the party’s primary ballot last year and insists — incorrectly — that former President Donald Trump won the 2020 election, was selected by the party’s executive committee out of a seven-person field.Williams crossed the required 50% threshold on the third ballot after being endorsed by one of his competitors, indicted former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who had failed to surpass 10%. Peters faces seven felony charges for her alle...
