BOSTON (AP) — There’s no other ballpark in the majors where Luis Robert Jr.’s 311-foot line drive would have been a home run.Heck, it might not have even gotten high enough to clear Fenway Park’s 37-foot Green Monster in left. But the White Sox slugger’s curving liner found the front row of the right field seats beyond Fenway’s Pesky Pole in the ninth inning of a scoreless game on Saturday to give Chicago a 1-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox.“It was hilarious because he’s got (38) home runs and all that, and then he hits one 311,” said Dylan Cease, who struck out 11 in seven scoreless innings to surpass 200 strikeouts for the third straight season. “Baseball is funny like that sometimes.”Playing in a cold rain, with the wind blowing in at a steady 10 mph, Cease and Boston starter Nick Pivetta matched scoreless innings before both departed after seven. Aaron Bummer (5-5) pitched the eighth for Chicago, walking the first two batters before retiring the he...Red Sox waste Pivetta’s 7 shutout innings in 1-0 loss

On Saturday, two original American League franchises with losing records played a meaningless ballgame at Major League Baseball’s oldest ballpark, the Chicago White Sox beating the Boston Red Sox 1-0.Indeed, it was a mediocre pair of Sox that faced off at Fenway Park on a rainy first day of fall. The pitchers’ duel, however, was anything but. For seven innings, Nick Pivetta and Dylan Cease shut out one another’s offense. Cease notched his 200th strikeout early on, and finished the evening with 11 punchouts and zero walks. Of course, he had some help from a Red Sox lineup that continues leaving men (10) on base as if they’re allergic to driving in runs; Boston was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding six during Cease’s portion of the game, and finished the day with eight hits and nothing to show for them.As the Boston bats took and quickly gave back their chances, Pivetta held down the fort. He needed just 92 pitches to mow down the White Sox, striking out seven and al...‘Enough is enough’: State Police trooper dragged by vehicle in western Massachusetts, 2nd such incident in a week

State Police located and arrested a man with a history of driving under the influence they say dragged one of their own during a traffic stop gone haywire.“Twice in a matter of about a week is twice too many. Today another member was injured when struck and dragged by a fleeing suspect during a traffic stop in Holyoke. Enough is enough,” said Patrick McNamara, the president of the State Police Association of Massachusetts, the trooper union, in a statement released Friday. The earlier incident McNamara referenced involved Derek Lobo, 31, of Brockton, who was arrested on Sept. 14 and faces charges related to allegedly dragging a trooper during a traffic stop in Brockton earlier that day.“This reckless and blatant disregard for the lives of our members needs to stop. We are relieved that the involved Trooper was not seriously injured and pleased that this fugitive was apprehended quickly thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Troopers and local Law Enforcement partners,” he adde...Louisville rolls Boston College 56-28 in ACC shootout

After showing so much promise in a two-point loss to No. 3 Florida State, Boston College got rolled 56-28 by Louisville in an ACC match on Saturday at L&N Financial Credit Union Stadium. The Cardinals scored a touchdown on their opening seven possessions to improve to 4-0 and 2-0 in the ACC. Louisville compiled 374 yards of total offense in the first half and had seven explosive plays of 27 yards or more. BC fell to 1-3 and 0-2 and will host Virginia next Saturday at Alumni Stadium.“The lack of execution and loss of one-on-ones and we were uncharacteristic on defense, I’ve never seen us play like that since we’ve been here,” said BC coach Jeff Hafley.“I did not see that coming, we had a great week, upbeat, and I thought we had a very good plan and we just came out flat and didn’t execute. This won’t happen next week, I am very confident in that.”Louisville senior transfer quarterback Jack Plummer shredded the BC secondary by completing 18-of-28 passes for 388 yards and five touch...Billerica fends off late rally, beats Central Catholic

There’s a brand-new face on the Massachusetts girls’ cross country and she’s quickly becoming a harrier the rest of the state will have to take notice of.Apponequet senior Hailey Desmarais quietly won her first two dual meets of the season and Saturday ran away from the varsity field in a steady, chilly rain for the win at the Franklin Park Invitational. Desmarais, who took up running last April and already has a 3:17 marathon under her belt, sailed across the finish line in 20 minutes, 42.9 seconds for the challenging 3.1-mile course. That time put her well ahead of Andover’s Rose Kiley (20:31.7) and third-place finisher Julia Davis of Bishop Fenwick (20:31.7).Late to the show in cross country, Desmarais has a number of road race victories under her belt and said she regularly ran 100-mile weeks during the summer. Residents in parts of coastal North Carolina and Virginia experienced flooding Saturday after Tropical Storm Ophelia made landfall near a North Carolina barrier island, bringing rain, damaging winds and dangerous surges. The storm came ashore near Emerald Isle with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph, but winds weakened as it traveled north with the center of the storm crossing into Virginia by evening, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Ophelia is expected to sweep northeast Sunday along the mid-Atlantic coast to New Jersey.Videos from social media showed riverfront communities in North Carolina such as New Bern, Belhaven and Washington experiencing significant flooding. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.Even before it made landfall, the storm proved treacherous enough that five people had to be rescued by the Coast Guard on Friday night from a boat anchored down near the North Carolina coastline.Ophelia promises a weekend of windy conditions and heavy rai...Lawrence Academy blanks Belmont Hill 24-0

BELMONT — The conditions were less than ideal for a season opener, but that didn’t matter to Michael Landolfi and his Lawrence Academy teammates. The Spartans arrived in Belmont looking to defend their share of the Independent School League title. They took a first step toward that goal, rolling to a 24-0 victory over Belmont Hill. Landolfi completed 6-of-12 for 83 yards to go with 44 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Jordan Johnson added 83 yards rushing.“The score does not indicate what happened out there today,” Lawrence Academy coach Jason Swepson said. “Two physical teams, and I just think we won the turnover battle. I think that’s what it came down to. We had some young guys make some big plays, and our veterans played well.”With only a few seconds to play in the opening frame, Lawrence Academy (1-0) struck as senior captain Michael Gregoire muscled his way in from the 1, giving the Spartans a 7-0 lead with 50 ticks left in the first.Shortly after a Brady Scott intercep...Nevada Republicans have approved rules for their presidential caucus seen as helping Donald Trump

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Republican Party approved rules Saturday for their presidential caucus that many campaigns suspect are meant to help former President Donald Trump win the state’s GOP delegates. The provisions would bar any candidate from the Feb. 8 caucus if they participate in the state-run primary two days earlier. They would also restrict super PACs, like the one Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is relying on, from trying to bolster support for candidates in a caucus. The party approved the new rules at a closed-door meeting of its central committee. Two people familiar with the matter confirmed the result to The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the vote publicly. The moves reflect Trump’s grip on many state parties and his status as the perennial frontrunner, particularly in Nevada, where the state GOP is run by allies of the former president. For months, the Nevada Republican Party has insis...Man charged with first degree murder in shooting death of B.C.
