More than 6,000 United Methodist congregations — a fifth of the U.S. total — have now received permission to leave the denomination amid a schism over theology and the role of LGBTQ people in the nation’s second-largest Protestant denomination.Those figures emerge following the close of regular meetings in June for the denomination’s regional bodies, known as annual conferences. OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says the country posted a merchandise trade deficit of $3.4 billion in May, the largest deficit since October 2020.The result compared with a revised surplus of $894 million in April.Exports fell 3.8 per cent to $61.5 billion in May as exports of energy products fell 7.3 per cent, in large part due to lower prices.Exports of farm, fishing and intermediate food products also dropped 13.4 per cent for the month.Meanwhile, imports rose 3.0 per cent in May to $65 billion as imports of metal and non-metallic mineral products rose 12.3 per cent, helped higher by shipments of unwrought silver from the United Kingdom. Earth’s average temperature on Wednesday remained at an unofficial record high set the day before, the latest grim milestone in a week that has seen series of climate-change-driven extremes.The average global temperature was 17.18 Celsius (62.9 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, a tool that uses satellite data and computer simulations to measure the world’s condition. GRANVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Granville man was arrested following a stolen pipe investigation in Whitehall. Matthew Austin, 25, is charged with second-degree burglary. On Saturday, around 9:35 a.m., troopers responded to a home in Whitehall for reports of copper pipes being stolen from the plumbing of the home. On arrival, troopers say they found Austin hiding inside the home. Police say an investigation determined Austin was in the unoccupied house without permission and is responsible for reported damages. The missing copper pipes were found nearby, along with his personal belongings. Corinth man arrested in home burglary investigation Austin was arrested and taken to Greenwich State Police for processing. Lakewood police investigating an officer-involved shooting along West Colfax Avenue early Thursday have reopened the westbound lanes that were closed at Pierce Street.For several hours, police had closed the westbound lanes, advising drivers to detour north on Pierce to West 20th Avenue. Lanes on the southbound 5 Freeway were closed for several hours Thursday morning when a pickup truck crashed into the center divider in the Newhall area.The incident was reported around 3:45 a.m. near the 14 Freeway interchange and just past Calgrove Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol's traffic incident log. The pickup truck was blocking two freeway lanes before the incident turned into a multi-vehicle crash when two other cars became involved.
