Fires are ignited, nerves get frayed and pets cower under beds.At the Sunday event, modeled after the popular gun buyback programs, community members earned up to $75 in cash, based on weight, by turning in their fireworks. The county’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians collected many illegal and potentially deadly pyrotechnics such as military grade smoke grenades, M-80s, aerial rockets and mortar style fireworks.Fireworks are prohibited in all Bay Area counties, with some exceptions in some cities for the “safe and sane” varieties, which are neither projectile nor explosive. “Safe and sane” fireworks include fountains, sparklers, smokeballs, snake-t...VIDEO: Employee held at gunpoint during armed robbery at Oakland donut shop
