Brent Burns met with the media inside a nondescript locker room at Sharks Ice in San Jose last April and all but declared that time was running short for him to be a part of a Stanley Cup-contending team again.“It’s definitely tough when you lose three years not making the playoffs,” said Burns, who was 37 then. “I think everybody feels that way whether they’re young or older.”Just over a year later, Burns is right where he wants to be. Traded by new Sharks general manager Mike Grier to Carolina last July, Burns and the Hurricanes, starting Thursday, face the upstart Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference final, eight wins away from hoisting that elusive silver chalice.A handful of other ex-Sharks are in the same spot, as former members of Team Teal also dot the lineups of the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars, who start their Western Conference final on Friday. While those teams compete for the Cup, the Sharks have gone four straight years without a postseason appearance, wi...Un conductor en Colorado trató de cambiar de asiento con su perro para evitar un arresto, dice la policía

After years of explosive growth during the pandemic, Home Depot’s revenue during the first quarter fell short of expectations and the company cut its profit and sales outlook for the year, sending shares lower at the opening bell. Home Depot on Tuesday projected its first decline in annual revenue since 2009 in the aftermath of the bursting of the housing bubble and financial crisis. It was a rough start to a busy week of retail earnings and the numbers from the nation’s biggest home improvement chain dragged down retails stocks as well as the Dow. Shares in rival Lowe’s fell harder than Home Depot. For the three months ended April 30, revenue dropped to $37.26 billion from last year’s $38.91 billion, and it was short of the $38.45 billion projected by analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research.Sales at stores open at least a year, a key indicator of a retailer’s health, dropped 4.5%, and it dropped 4.6% for stores in the U.S. “After a three-year peri...Authorities: Mentally ill man who attacked congressional staffers has violent history

BERLIN (AP) — A German court on Tuesday convicted a Jesuit priest of coercion in connection with a climate protest last year and ordered him to pay a small fine. The district court in Munich handed down its verdict in the case of the Rev. Joerg Alt after he participated in a road blockade in the Bavarian capital on Oct. 28. Also appearing in the proceedings were Cornelia Huth, a biologist and member of the group Scientist Rebellion, and Luca Thomas, a student. The court convicted all three of coercion and imposed fines in line with their income. In Alt’s case, that was a 10-euro ($10.85) fine; the court said the other two defendants’ fines added up to a “low to mid-three-digit” sum.Numerous similar protests have taken place across Germany and other countries recently as climate activists try to draw attention to the urgency of tackling global warming. The public and political response to such road blockades has been mixed. So far, most courts have acquitted the protesters ...US senate takes aim at DC police reform bill that would ban chokeholds, increase bodycam footage access

D.C.’s police reform measures that aim to increase accountability could be blocked in the Senate as early as Tuesday.Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance introduced the disapproval resolution last week. It is the companion to the resolution passed by the House on Apr. 19.“It’s a disgrace that the capital of the most powerful nation on earth has become so dangerous, but this sad reality is exactly what we should expect when far-left activists are calling the shots,” Vance wrote in a statement. “For the good of every American who lives in or visits this town, I urge my colleagues to support my disapproval motion.”He and other Republicans point to staggering crimes rates, specifically homicides which are up 7% over the same time last year and carjackings, which have seen a 114% rise since last year, according to recent D.C. police data. The Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022 was passed by the D.C. council in December.
