Tent removal will begin in earnest Wednesday at the area known as Mass. & Cass, at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard and Boston police officers will be supporting city officials with enforcing the new tent ban.The ban is part of an effort to combat illegal activity and drug use in the area. The removal process comes a week after Boston city councilors voted to give officers the ability to enforce the ban.“I think it is inhumane to allow people to live in a tent, they’re rat-infested, there’s ongoing drug activity, there’s violence, they’re assault, drug-dealing, sexual assault, we can never allow that type of situation to occur in the city of Boston again,” councilor Flynn said.Of the removal, Mayor Wu said, “This change is about ensuring people have access to resources who really need to it to bring services to those who really need services and then ensuring we’re focusing on public safety and the tents...Drops, Flakes and Chilly Air

There was certainly a little chill in the air last night for the Trick-or-Treaters, but with light winds and dry air, overall, it was a solid evening for the kiddos, who running from house to house, seem oblivious to the cold anyway. I hope everyone had a great time last night and enjoyed the evening. Today, the battle goes on trying to keep the candy intake under control. Also, the battle goes on fighting a bit of a chill in the air as we lose our completely dry weather. A few scattered showers sprout up from time to time, with the highest risk favoring near the coast and down through Southeast Mass. Inland, showers are more isolated, and with some chilly air in place, a few flakes may mix in from time to time, especially across the higher terrain. I do expect any accumulation issues. Temps today run in the upper 30s with showers are present to the mid 40s during dry times. Showers fade away this evening and skies clear out quickly. That’ll allow temps to fade fast too with ...Police investigating shooting in Salem

Boston College men’s basketball coach Earl Grant is flush with continuity, a rare occurrence in the new age of high-profile collegiate athletics.According to Grant, only he and Marquette coach Shaka Smart are beginning the 2023-24 season holding similar pat hands. The Eagles have three starters and nine lettermen back from a team that won eight regular season ACC games, including upset victories over Florida State and Virginia, and one in the conference tournament.“We have nine returners, which is rare in this era with transfers and NIL,” said Grant. “Somebody told me at the ACC meetings there are only two teams (in Division 1) that have that many returners and they are Boston College and Marquette.“It’s been pretty refreshing and there were times in practice before I can actually teach a play or teach a scheme, the older team might do it before I teach it.“They teach the other guys on their own so there is a great understanding of what we are trying to do. That’s because of the con...A fire in the Jewish section of a cemetery in Austria’s capital causes damage but no injuries

MOSCOW (AP) — Huge ash columns erupted from Eurasia’s tallest active volcano Wednesday, forcing authorities to close schools in two towns on Russia’s sparsely populated Kamchatka Peninsula. The eruptions from the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano sent ash as high as 13 kilometers (8 miles) above sea level, officials said. There were no reports of injuries, but officials ordered schools in Ust-Kamchatsk and Klyuchy closed as a precaution. Each town has a population of about 5,000. Klyuchy is located about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the volcano and Ust-Kamchatsk 50 kilometers (30 miles) away. The 4,650-meter (15,255-foot) stratovolcano has been active in recent years and released lava in June. The Kamchatka Peninsula, which extends into the Pacific Ocean about 6,700 kilometers (4,100 miles) east of Moscow, is noted for its array of active and dormant volcanoes, geysers and geothermal springs.
