Orioles surge past Yankees, 9-6, behind 8-run 7th inning as Gunnar Henderson, Adam Frazier continue hot May

Neither Gunnar Henderson nor Adam Frazier began this season the way they or the Orioles hoped. The two infielders, one a rookie and the other a veteran, have done their best to make up for it of late. The pair contributed the biggest hits of Baltimore’s eight-run seventh inning Wednesday night against the New York Yankees that turned a four-run deficit into a four-run lead as the Orioles evened their series at Yankee Stadium with a 9-6 victory.Baltimore (32-17) entered the frame trailing 5-1, with Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes, briefly an Oriole to start his career, to that point continuing his success against his former team. Cortes took the mound for the seventh with a 1.39 ERA in 45 1/3 career innings against Baltimore, but a walk to Anthony Santander and a single by Austin Hays brought up Frazier, who launched an elevated fastball off the right field foul pole for a three-run home run to cut the Orioles’ deficit to one.The blast was Frazier’s sixth, with the...Nestor Cortes’ late struggles persist as 8-run seventh pushes Orioles past Yankees

The third time through opponents’ lineups and the end of starts have haunted Nestor Cortes this season, so much so that he recently called his struggles in such situations “the story of my season.”That tale added another painful chapter Wednesday when Cortes served up a seventh-inning, three-run blast to the Orioles’ Adam Frazier. The home run smacked into Yankee Stadium’s right field foul pole and ruined what had been an impressive evening for Cortes. The Yankees still led, 5-4, at that point, but Baltimore scored eight total runs in the seventh after Jimmy Cordero and Albert Abreu followed Cortes out of the bullpen. The offensive outburst led to a 9-6 Orioles win, even though the Yankees were up, 5-1, when the inning began.Cortes entered the game with a 1.503 OPS when pitching the third time through the order this season, and he left it after allowing five hits, four runs, two walks, five strikeouts and two home runs over six complete innings and 89 pi...Wednesday’s high school roundup/scores: Methuen blanks MVC rival North Andover, 5-0

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Guam residents and officials emerged from homes and shelters Thursday to survey the damage done to the U.S. Pacific territory after a long night of hunkering down as Typhoon Mawar’s howling winds shredded trees, flipped vehicles and knocked out utilities. There were no immediate reports of deaths and injuries but the central and northern parts of the island received more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) of rain as the eyewall passed. The island’s international airport flooded and the swirling typhoon churned up a storm surge and waves that crashed through coastal reefs. “We are waking up to a rather disturbing scene out there across Guam. We’re looking out our door and what used to be a jungle looks like toothpicks — it looks like a scene from the movie ‘Twister,’ with trees just thrashed apart,” said Landon Aydlett, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.“Most of Guam is dealing with a major mess that’s gonna take weeks to clean up,” he...Tkachuk sends Panthers to Stanley Cup Final, after topping Hurricanes 4-3 for sweep

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Federal officials say more than 200 patients could be at risk of fungal meningitis after having surgical procedures at clinics in a Mexico border city. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday it is collaborating with the Mexican Ministry of Health and U.S. state and local health departments to respond to the outbreak among patients who traveled to Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville, Texas. Officials have identified and closed two clinics linked to the outbreak, River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3. The Mexican Ministry of Health sent the CDC a list of 221 U.S. patients who might be at risk for meningitis based on their recorded surgical procedures at either clinic from January to May 13. Three additional patients not on the list have also been identified, bringing the total of people in the United States known to have potential exposure to 224, the CDC said. The CDC is working with more than two dozen state and ...WGN fixes Taylor Swift ticket trouble for Suburban family

It’s not just Ticketmaster struggling to keep up with the enormous demand for Taylor Swift tickets as the superstar brings her shows to Chicago next week.WGN Investigates was contacted by a LaGrange Park family frustrated after spending the past six months trying to secure tickets for seats they purchased via StubHub.“They state: ‘Your order guarantees a ticket valid for entry in the event,’” Diana Finnegan said reading off the confirmation email she received after purchasing four tickets last November. When the electronic tickets didn’t arrive, Finnegan embarked on a six month ordeal that included dozens of phone calls, emails and messages to StubHub customer service.“We’re here to make sure you get your tickets in time for the event” StubHub reps wrote in multiple emails. “We will provide you all the help that you need to receive the tickets for the event.” However, the fine print of StubHub’s “Fan Protect Guarantee” says the company promises to get buyers the tickets they ordered...Unregulated, candy-like edibles pose threat to children

There is a troubling rise in children overdosing on edibles. They look like candy. They are unregulated. With names like "Trips Ahoy" in a cookie package, some kids are falling victim to the marketing while others, hungry to experiment, are sharing with their friends. The result, kids are going to the hospital by the dozens while parents, educators and doctors are sounding the alarm. On April 19, Ebonique Kemp received a phone call from Chicago’s Uplift High School, where her 14-year-old twins are freshman.“The school said they are on the way to send twins off to hospital due to some gummy bears going around that were edible,” she said. “So I’m freaking out a little bit thinking, ‘What is going on?’ ‘How did the kids get a hold of it?’” she said. “I was nervous. I was scared. I was panicking a little bit.”The twins got the gummies from a fellow classmate. In total, five students were transported by ambulance to local hospitals after ingesting what police described as edibl...One person in custody after incident in southeast Austin, police say
