Opinion: Perfection cannot be the standard for (re)naming efforts in Colorado Toward the end of the movie Oppenheimer, President Harry S. Truman accuses the title character of being a “cry baby scientist.” The comment, true to history though it was said privately to staff, so completely diminishes the brilliant physicist’s anguish over the detonation of the first atomic bombs that he helped create. If that’s all the viewer knows of that president, one would think Truman a small man who lacked empathy for Oppenheimer and the more than 214,000 people who died from the blasts by 1945. Yet Truman was anything but; he oversaw the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Airlift, and the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. When viewed in the context of their life and times, it is clear that both men’s contributions to history were far greater than their failings. A single moment does not a person define. The Denver Agency for Human Rights and Community Partnerships and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which just renamed Mt. Evans to Mt. Blue Sky, must keep this principle in ...

49ers’ Shanahan regrets not keeping McCaffrey fresh with Elijah Mitchell vs. Rams Heading into a short week, expect coach 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to throttle back on his use of do-everything running back Christian McCaffrey.McCaffrey rushed for 116 yards on 20 carries with a 14-yard touchdown run in a 30-23 road win over the Los Angeles Rams, piggy-backing off his 152-yard performance against Pittsburgh in Week 1. He also caught three passes for 19 yards. After playing all 57 snaps against the Rams, McCaffrey has been off the field for only 10 plays through two games — having played 58 of 68 snaps against the Steelers in the opener. His lawyers argue that whistleblower protections don’t apply, but a lawyer for one agent said any confidential information released came under whistleblower authorization and called the suit a “frivolous smear.”The lawsuit marks the latest legal pushback from Biden as a long-running federal investigation into him unfolds against a sharply political backdrop. That includes an impeachment inquiry aimed at his father, President Joe Biden, seeking to tie him to his son’s busi...
